The arrival of babies, education, and happy and sad events that connect these two Middle-class families with a similar link to blood relatives. On one side is the Donaldsons, a mob American family. On the other side is Yazdani, an Iranian-American family, whose matriarch, Maryam Yazdan, is a first generation Americans.
The Donaldsons keep the original name of their baby Jin-ho and the plan to increase their leave without forgetting its roots. Yazdani, change the second name of your baby Suki Suzanne feel at home. Despite this and other differences, families are adapted to each and became good friends.
What makes the story not so much the plot of the trajectory of fire, but the authenticity of the characters. The reader is not stereotypes but real people who are left to live their lives. As the characters turns telling each chapter, which also give their opinion. To the end, the reader finds all the characters to be carefully prepared, including their habits and peculiarities. Therefore, the main protagonist Maryam Yazdan, rises above the other characters reserved personality, and although the story does not seem to carry a message, points Maryam in the history of the idea that America is a melting pot and what makes an American is not in the documents of the people to lead, but his feelings for his adopted country.
Several sub-themes are also explored in the novel as the concept of family, friendship, adoption, the stratification of relationships between people, diversity of ethnic and cultural tastes, the immigrant experience, distancing, disease, adjustment to widowhood and become a widower. In the novel, nor the culture of the other leads to the superiority, on the contrary, we believe that the union two deliciously different cultures in one day very positive.
The language is novel in the style typical of Ann Tyler, easy but fascinating, however, flowing meditation and history was walking with a uniform rate. The book has 288 pages ISBN-10: 0307263940 and ISBN-13: 978-0307263940.
