Cross Stitch... Like Painting a Picture With Thread
Counted Cross Stitch is a great relaxing hobby, and has been around for a very long time.
You can purchase kits, that come complete with threads, stamped cross stitch fabric, and instructions, or you can create your own.
Cross stitch, is creating a picture using a cross stitch or counted "X"'s. It is easy to learn, and once you have it mastered, you can take it anywhere.
Traditionally, cross-stitch was used to decorate items like dishcloths, household linens, and doilies, and was taught to young girls, along with embroidery and other needlework. They would start their hope chest with these items from a very young age.
Although most cross stitchers, prefer to use it to create pictures that can be framed. The fabric consists of tiny holes that can be counted, and that is why it is called "Counted Cross Stitch" you basically stitch a "X" into each of these small square holes, with different colored threads.
You can also draw your own pictures on the cloth and get creative with color. There is no limit. There are many instructions books that teach you to cross stitch, but I found a video to be the best way to learn. It feels more hands on, than pictures in a book.
With all the great products and kits on the market now, you can create some very one of a kind art with cross stitch. Put with the right frame, this can be stunning. If you are a beginner, start with a simple cross stitch kit, and once practiced, move up to more detailed ones or create your own works of art.
Cross stitch is like painting a picture with thread.. it is beautiful.

Cross Stitch - What does this mean?
I just bought my first standalone cross stitch pattern and all of the supplies for the project. I've only used kits and aida fabric to this point. This project calls for 32ct linen fabric and says "...using two strands of floss over two threads of linen" I know the "two strands" refers to using two of the 6 strands of floss...pretty standard. But, having never used linen, what does the "two threads" mean? Does this mean that a "square" for a single cross stitch actually consists of 9 holes in the fabric?
Also, how much fabric should I leave around the outside of the project when I cut my fabric?
Aida is a "block weave" fabric, which means if you look at it, it's made up of clusters of threads woven into cloth. Linen (or evenweave) is made up of individual fabric fibers. Rather than stitch each hole as you do in aida, you stitch every other hole when you're using linen or evenweave. Picture a tic-tac-toe board, like #. Come up at the lower left, skip the middle hole, go down at the upper right. That's stitching "over two". Finish your X by doing the same steps from the other direction. Personally, I much prefer linens/evenweaves to aida because the background comes out looking so much nicer. Also, as you gain experience and start to explore other kinds of stitches (eyelets, Rhodes, etc.), they're far easier on linen. Just plain old quarter stitches (the ones that look like ` and drive you nuts on aida) will be much easier on linen because you don't have to punch an extra hole to do it. BTW, 32 ct linen over 2 comes out the same as 16 ct aida.
I prefer to leave a 3" fabric border on all sides.
