The twisted stiffeners used on barbed wire fencing between the posts: how are they put on?
Are they twisted by hand around existing fence? Is each wire threaded through a space in the stiffener?
I need to add a lowest wire to existing fence and stiffen each section, keep two 50# dogs in yard. Also keep cows out, from time to time.
One section of perimeter, 3 feet wide, isn't satisfactorily fenced. One end is the concrete wall of a building. The other end is high metal gate frame.
The lowest 30" are cement blocks. There is some heavy decorative wire fencing I can use to fill the 36" stretch -- but how to attach to both solid ends?
Thank you for thinking about this and for taking your time to answer.
Hondu: Hmn. Never would have dreamed the stiffeners were so easy-sounding to use.
Thanks also for the names of fasteners and tools. A question like mine indicates that the asker needs as much specific help as possible. And you gave it.
Selection of Best Answer almost done, waiting to see what else may turn up!
You start the open end of the stiffener on the top wire and simply screw it onto each wire in turn. Many folks make their own stiffeners from regular barb wire. Use a length slightly longer than the distance between top and bottom wires. Twist one end of the wire around the top wire, pull it straight down and twist around the next wire and so on down the line. Pretty simple really. You could use a masonry drill bit on the cement block and install expanding anchors in the holes and either drill and tap the gate frame for screws or tie the fencing to the frame with wire.
